Prince William County Flood Resilience Plan (PWC-FRP) Survey

Prince William County (PWC) is developing a Flood Resilience Plan (FRP) to:

  1. assess current and future flood risks 
  2. prioritize initiatives that reduce future impacts to people, property, infrastructure, and the environment


As part of this effort, we want to hear about your experiences with flooding in PWC. Your input will help us better understand community concerns and identify flood resilience priorities across the county.

Types of Flooding

Illustration of river overflowing its banksRiver Flood: Occurs when water levels exceed a river's banks due to excessive rain from tropical systems, persistent thunderstorms over the same area, combined rain and snowmelt, or ice jams.

Inland Flood: Occurs when moderate precipitation accumulates over several days, intense precipitation falls over a short time or a river overflows from an ice or debris dam or dam or levee failure.

Flash Flood: Caused by heavy excessive rainfall in a short period of time, generally less than six hours. Can also occur when no rain has fallen, such as a dam or levee failure.

Coastal Flood: Inundation of land areas along the coast, caused by higher-than-average tide, worsened by heavy rainfall and onshore winds.

Storm Surge: Abnormal rise in water level in coastal areas, over and above the regular astronomical tide, caused by a severe storm's wind, waves and low atmospheric pressure.
