What is Digital Prince William?
Digital Prince William (DPW) is an initiative established to provide access to high-speed internet countywide, help residents find affordable services and devices, and offer basic technology training opportunities that enable every county resident to develop skills that are essential to their economic and social wellbeing. The program is sponsored by the Department of Information Technology (DoIT) in partnership with multiple county agencies.
Main Goals of Digital Prince William
Universal, high-speed broadband availability countywide.
Connect residents to affordability programs for broadband services and devices and advocate for affordable options.
Help residents sharpen skills that will enable them to better navigate in a technology-driven economy and stay connected to community, family, friends and government.
Success Criteria for Digital Prince William
Increase broadband adoption.
Increase awareness and participation in free tech literacy and affordability programs available to county residents.
Classes completed.
Technology certifications achieved.
Drive up hotspot and Chromebook loaner program participation.
Major Milestones Completed (2020-Summer 2024)
2020
- Fall 2020: Digital Prince William (DPW) launched in response to the Board of County Supervisors (BOCS) Directive No. 20-55.
- Winter 2020: DoIT and Prince William County Schools purchased and deployed over 4,000 hotspots with service for use by Title I students without reliable Internet.
2021
- Spring 2021: Highspeed broadband access gaps assessment completed.
- Summer 2021: Promoted federal internet affordability programs in collaboration with the Office of Communications and Engagement.
- Fall/Winter 2021: DoIT piloted free technology training for older adults with the Area Agency on Aging.
2022
- Summer 2022: Developed a best practices plan for the DPW program included but not limited to examining best practices from other jurisdictions nationwide.
- Fall 2022: DoIT established partnerships with multiple county agencies including Prince Wiliam Public Libraries, Area Agency on Aging, Community Services, and the Virtual Center for Active Adults sponsored by a regional consortia of local governments.
- Winter 2022: Secured program funding via a BOCS allocation of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
2023
- Spring 2023: DoIT hired program staff including a Digital Navigator fluent in English and Spanish to provide free basic technology training to residents in collaboration with partner agencies.
- Summer 2023: DoIT deployed the Northstar digital literacy platform to support free technology skills assessments and training at multiple partner locations.
- Summer 2023: Prince William County secured a $247,000 competitive federal grant for Digital Prince William to promote a new federal internet affordability program countywide.
2024
- Summer 2024: The County awarded a contract to Verizon to install broadband fiber-optic infrastructure in 470 unserved and underserved County areas by 2025.
